Chapter History

Omega Upsilon Omega Chapter was chartered on December 10, 2017. It is the seventy-fifth chapter in the Far Western Region of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

The vision to establish a graduate chapter of the sorority in central and east Contra Costa County began in 2015. Led by Ava Sudduth, and eight other general members the group met to discuss the feasibility of organizing a chapter. They were, Marcie Oliver Brown, Lolita Livingston, Regina Lucas, Patrice McElroy, Monica Sudduth, Lesha Titus Taylor, Svonne Underwood, and Linda Walls.

A group of nine general members met to discuss the need for and the feasibility of organizing a chapter. The decision was made to move forward with the process to establish a chapter. Members began recruiting other general members in the area who were equally as passionate about service and sisterhood as defined by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

On January 9, 2016, the members met with the 24th Far Western Regional Director, Dr. Barbara Denson Trotter, to discuss the process of becoming an AKA Interest Group. The Contra Costa County Pearls of Purpose Interest Group’s application was approved by the International Board of Directors, on March 1, 2016, in Chicago, IL. Under the leadership of the 25th Regional Director, Mrs. Carol R. Dixon, we were able to complete the process of becoming a chapter.

The Contra Costa County Pearls of Purpose immediately began to serve the community through Launching New Dimensions of Services (LNDS) program initiatives established by our International President, Dr. Dorothy Buckhanan Wilson.

Omega Upsilon Omega provides funding for scholarships for high school seniors, local and HBCU college students. The chapter supported the STEM program at Mt. Diablo High School in Concord, clothing for children in Haiti through our Global Impact program and supported the arts education by purchasing books for middle school students studying the Harlem Renaissance.

Today, Omega Upsilon Omega chapter has established a presence in our local communities. Through our program initiatives:  Empower Our Families, Build Our Economic Wealth, Enhance Our Environment, Advocate for Social Justice, Uplift Our Local Community, and Strengthen Our Sisterhood, the chapter provides a manifold of services to uplift and improve the lives of those we support.  The chapter continues to grow and serve the communities of Central and East Contra Costa County.
